Welcome to Counting Collections at the University of Nottingham.

What is Counting Collections?

Counting Collections is an approach to teaching a learning number in the early years. It involves

  • teachers running a four part routine involving choosing, strategising, counting and recording
  • having a Counting Collections library in continuous provision

What is the Counting Collections research trial?

The trial is a randomised controlled efficacy trial funded by the Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund and commissioned by the Education Endowment Foundation. 180 teachers are taking part in the trial:

90 teachers are in the intervention group. They run weekly 30-minutes CC whole-class sessions and have Counting Collections libraries available in provision.

90 teachers are in the control group. They continue to teach as they usually do.

The intervention is designed and run by the University of Nottingham and the trial is being evaluated by Sheffield Hallam University.
