Professional development for Counting Collections

An important element of the Counting Collections programme is the professional development provided for teachers. Teachers join a group of local colleagues and attend one in-person whole day and four online half days of professional development.

The professional development includes access to an online learning environment which provides opportunities for sharing practice and action planning. During the online sessions, the learning platform is used to provoke further discussion and exemplification in a highly interactive way. Teachers are invited to post photographs of practice and share their insights into episodes of early number activity in their own classrooms.

The professional development materials are accessible to participants afterwards, and the sessions include multiple opportunities for professional discussions and reflection.

Teacher subject knowledge and the complexities of number development are the focus of the professional development, which is built around four learning trajectories related to:

  • Counting
  • Subitising
  • Comparing
  • Composing.
